Keeping Small Pets Safe During Summer & Heatwaves Best small animal boarding in Essex

With temperatures set to soar this weekend and beyond, it’s important to remember that our small pets can struggle in the heat just as much as we do — sometimes even more! At Hopefield Boarding for Small Animals, animal welfare is always our top priority, so we’re sharing some simple ways to help keep your furry (and feathered!) friends cool, safe, and happy during the warmer weather.

Top Tips for Keeping Small Pets Cool

Keep Living Spaces Cool & Shaded

Make sure enclosures and indoor living areas are kept out of direct sunlight and well ventilated. Temperatures can rise very quickly during a heatwave, especially in enclosed spaces.

Fresh Water is Essential 💧

Always provide plenty of cool, fresh drinking water and check bottles and bowls regularly throughout the day to ensure they’re working properly and staying topped up.

Create Cool Spots

Cooling mats, frozen water bottles wrapped in towels, ceramic tiles, and chilled pet-safe vegetables can all help pets regulate their body temperature. Rabbits and guinea pigs especially enjoy having cool surfaces to stretch out on.

Avoid Stress During Peak Heat

Try to minimise handling, transport, and exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Early mornings and evenings are usually much more comfortable for pets.

Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Lethargy, panting, drooling, weakness, or unusual behaviour can all be warning signs that a pet is overheating. If you’re concerned, contact your vet immediately.

Small animals, birds, and reptiles can all be vulnerable during hot weather, so keeping a close eye on temperatures is essential. Some pets may need additional cooling support, while reptiles may require careful temperature monitoring to ensure their environments stay safe and comfortable.

As one of the best small animal boarding facilities in Essex, at Hopefield Boarding for Small Animals we take extra precautions during hot weather to make sure every guest stays cool, comfortable, and stress-free — whatever the forecast brings.
